“Mom, one of the greatest gifts is to not have everything you want, but to want everything you have.” This was the comment that came out of my 10 year olds mouth the other day! Wow. Our Granny B use to always say she really believed our little ones are born smarter. I definitely have to agree.
My reply to him was, “That is really wise honey. And yes, that is true.”
I wanted to understand more about what he was thinking here, so we had a little talk about it.
I shared with him that to want things is a good thing. It is a beautiful gift. We have those desires, interests & dreams to help us fulfill our purposes here. (He nodding his head in agreement while I am talking.)
“But”, he jumps in, “we can be happy right now with what we already have before us.” Again, I agreed with him.
He was referring to his experience with not getting to be able to play the computer for longer than the time he was allowed to play that day. He spent a good portion of the day upset about this & letting me know by his attitude. (Yes, he is a typical human being!) But, while I was preparing dinner that night, he decided to come sit at the counter & we started talking & laughing & just having a good time being together. This is when he made this wise comment to me.
In talking with him, it was important to me that he understood it is so important to keep reaching for his dreams & wants. This reaching & going after our dreams helps us to grow, change when need be & brings a natural gift of fulfillment as we follow our hearts & bring into fruition that which only we can as the unique beings we each are.
But, he affirmed to me that he understood, by this experience, that we can be happy by beholding, by engaging in, the gifts already before us.
The opportunities for our own joy, & blessing the life of others to have joy, are before us now. Are we taking them?
As we do so, we receive three gifts…..
1) We do not have to put off our happiness for some future day, but feel joy, peace & fulfillment right now.
2)We come to realize, in a very real sense that all that we have ever really wanted is already before us.
3)That which we do rightly seek, can then come to us in more ease & grace because the “neediness” or “don’t have it” around this desire is now gone. We already feel, in the present, that happiness, fulfillment, security, etc. that we believed that desire would bring us. In this state, we naturally attract more like unto it.
And, when that which we desire does come to us, as is naturally does, although we no longer need it, it is simply icing on the very yummy & fulfilling cake that already is the gift of life we are living.
What a beautiful way to live. We are given each day, each moment & every interaction with our loved ones to choose this. I made the choice to to live the gift of my life, beholding & engaging in the blessings already before me, some time ago. With the way life works though, I get to choose this again & again throughout my day. We all do. We can start right this very moment. Will you? It is clearly true there is no better time than the present!
